Cyberattacks in Morocco: A Growing Threat in the Age of Digital Change

Cyberattaques au Maroc : la menace brutale d’un pays en pleine transformation numérique

Morocco has made real progress in going digital. Government services are now online, hospitals use connected devices, and factories rely on smart technology. But this progress has a dark side. The more connected we become, the more exposed we are to hackers and cybercriminals.

Over the past few months, Morocco has faced a wave of cyberattacks. This is not just a technical problem. It concerns everyone : governments, businesses, and citizens.

A report by Hackmanac, a cybersecurity research platform, puts Morocco among the top three most attacked countries in the world, with 27 recorded incidents. Only Italy (44 attacks) and the United States (43) ranked higher.

The Numbers Tell a Clear Story

In just the first six months of 2025, Morocco suffered more than 75,000 DDoS attacks, the kind that flood a website or service with traffic until it crashes. This makes Morocco one of the most targeted countries on the African continent.

That same year, over 500 connected medical devices, including scanners and MRI machines, were found to be openly accessible online, putting patient data at serious risk.

Why Is Morocco Being Targeted?

1. More technology means more risk

Every new connected device or digital service is a potential door for attackers. The faster Morocco grows digitally, the more entry points appear.

2. Many systems are not secure enough

A lot of devices still use default passwords that nobody ever changed. Networks are not properly separated. Data is sent without encryption. Medical devices plugged into the internet without protection are a perfect example of this gap between adoption and security.

3. Geopolitics

Some attacks are not just about money. Certain hacker groups openly state they are targeting Morocco for political reasons. Cyberspace has become another front in international disputes.

What Needs to Happen?

-Leaders and decision-makers : need to treat cybersecurity as a real priority, not an afterthought. That means setting a budget, defining clear goals, and putting someone in charge.

-IT teams : need to regularly check who has access to what, separate networks properly, encrypt data, and keep software up to date.

-Every employee :  has a role to play: double-check who sent that email, use strong passwords, and speak up if something seems off.
