What is the CIA certification ?

Who can take the CIA exam?


To be accepted into the CIA program, candidates must meet one of the following requirements:


  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher

  • Hold an active Internal Audit Practitioner designation

  • Have five years of internal audit experience

  • Be a full-time student in the final year of a university degree


Be an active student at an approved Internal Audit Education Partnership (IAEP) school


Other key notes :


  • Candidates may register and sit for the exams before fulfilling the professional experience requirement, but certification will only be granted once all requirements are met.

  • Relevant experience can include roles in internal audit, quality assurance, risk management, compliance, external audit, or internal control.

  • The Professional Certification Board (PCB) allows certain education and experience exemptions for ACCA members and for those with an active CPA licence in the U.S.


CIA exam structure


The CIA exam consists of three parts. To obtain certification, candidates must pass all three:


  • Part 1: Essentials of Internal Auditing – 2.5 hours, 125 questions.

  • Part 2: Practice of Internal Auditing – 2 hours, 100 questions.

  • Part 3: Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing – 2 hours, 100 questions.


Each part focuses on specific knowledge areas critical to the internal audit profession.
